How to Get Married in Egypt as a Foreigner – Legal and Religious Steps

Egypt offers a unique legal pathway for foreigners wishing to marry Egyptian citizens. Whether the foreigner shares the same religion or plans to convert to Islam, specific legal and religious procedures must be followed. This article explains everything from preparing documents abroad to officially registering the marriage in Egypt.

Prepare Documents Before Arrival

Foreigners must prepare and legalize the following documents before traveling

  • A valid passport
  • Original birth certificate (translated and legalized)
  • Marital status certificate (single/divorced/widowed).
  • No-objection certificate from their embassy.
  • Five recent personal photos (white background).

In the case of religious conversion
  • Willingness to declare Islam at Al-Azhar Al-Sharif.

    All documents must be
  • Translated into Arabic.
  • Certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in your country.
  • Stamped by the Egyptian Embassy (or the nearest embassy if unavailable locally).

Upon Arrival in Egypt

A. Religious Conversion (if required)

Visit Al-Azhar Al-Sharif to declare Islam and obtain an official conversion certificate.

B. Legal Marriage Registration

There are two main routes

Option 1: Ministry of Justice – Foreigners’ Marriage Office

  • Located in Lazoughly Square, Cairo.
  • Marriage is registered through civil procedures under Egyptian law.
  • Both parties must attend in person with all documents.

Option 2: Egyptian Courts (Recommended)

  • Suitable for mixed or complex cases.
  • Offers greater flexibility and clearer recognition of foreign documents.
  • Judges often allow customary law marriages in addition to legal registration.
  • Particularly useful when embassies do not issue no-objection certificates.

Why Courts Are Better

  • Courts often consider real-life circumstances with greater leniency.
  • Faster recognition of religious
  • More legally inclusive of cross-cultural marriages.

After Marriage

  • Register the marriage document with the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • Translate and legalize it for use in the foreign spouse’s country of origin.

Documents Required from a Foreign National Before Coming to Egypt In the Airport

  • No Objection Certificate: Issued by the embassy/consulate of the foreign national’s country, stating their country has no objection to the marriage with an Egyptian citizen.

Certificate of Proof of Religion (in case of religious conversion)

  • If the foreigner is non-Muslim and converts to Islam for marriage, obtain a certificate of declaration from Al-Azhar Al-Sharif in Cairo.
  • Birth Certificate: Original or certified copy, translated into Arabic and legalized by the Egyptian Embassy or your country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • Original valid passport.
  • Marital Status Statement: Notarized, translated, and certified (e.g., unmarried/divorced/widowed)

Notarization of Documents

All documents must be

  • Translated into Arabic by an authorized agency.
  • Notarized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of your country.
  • Notarized by the Egyptian Embassy or Consulate (if applicable).

What If There Is No Egyptian Embassy in Your Country?

Yes, the papers can be notarized at the nearest Egyptian embassy in a neighboring country, provided the country is recognized by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Contact the embassy in advance to arrange notarization and required dates.

Procedures Upon Arrival at Cairo Airport for Marriage and Religious Conversion

There are no special procedures at the airport related to marriage or religious conversion, but you must

  • Possess all original and translated documents.
  • Declare on the entry card that the reason for the visit is “tourism” or “private visit”

After entry

  • Visit Al-Azhar Al-Sharif to document the declaration of Islam (if converting)
  • Go to the Foreign Marriage Office at the Ministry of Justice to register the marriage.
